F1 India Grand Prix

The Indian Grand Prix at Buddh International Circuit enjoyed a quick three-year appearance on the F1 Calendar during the years 2011, 2012 and 2013. Despite popular among fans and drivers, the circuit was forced out of the lineup due to tax and financial issues and is not likely to return in the near future. Located just outside of New Delhi, this Hermann-Tilke designed circuit provided an excellent destination for a Grand Prix. The circuit’s characteristics has been compared to those of Belgium’s legendary Spa-Francorchamps with its long straights and wide corners – a layout optimal for overtaking.

Buddh International Circuit History

The organiser of the Indian Grand Prix, Jaypee Group, faced financial hurdles resulting from high maintenance costs of the circuit grounds, as well as from less development of surrounding urban structures due to the 2008 recession. Moreover, a tax dispute with the Uttar Pradesh government forces the organisers to step our despite having 2 years left on their contract with F1. Altough a grand recovery of maintenance costs was made after the Grand Prix’s third year of operation, the organisers are still experienced immense losses. If the conglomerate Jaypee Group can manage to reduce their debts and actively continue their promotion for F1 to return to India, we might see Buddh International Circuit on the calendar once again.
