F1 USA Grand Prix (Indianapolis)

Constructed in 1909, the historic speedway 10 kilometers west of Indianapolis is one of the world’s largest sporting venues when it comes to capacity: counting the spaces on the infield, 400,000 spectators can fit inside the gates of this gigantic racing fortress. Perhaps most famous for hosting the Indianapolis 500 and the Brickyard 400, this circuit was also home to the United States Grand Prix from 2000 to 2007. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is also welcoming guests to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway History

Despite initial success with high attendance numbers, the United States Grand Prix was only an Indianapolis regular on the Formula One calendar for a total of eight years. One of these races constituted a large controversy: in 2005, the Formula 1 rules required the racers to use the same tires throughout the event. This led to protests by the Michelin teams – stopping all cars after the parade lap, which let the Bridgestone teams finish the race in a disappointing three-team contest won by Ferrari. After this incident, the United States Grand Prix only stayed in Indianapolis for three more years. 2007 was the last Indianapolis Motor Speedway F1 Grand Prix, following an announcement from circuit owner Tone George disclosing difficulties in meeting the demands of Formula One Chief Executive Bernie Ecclestone.
